Summer Reading –
Middle School
(Students entering 6th, 7th, & 8th grades)
(To access a copy

Educators
consider summer reading very important in developing life-long reading habits,
in maintaining literacy skills and in promoting reading for pleasure. Studies
have repeatedly shown that children who continue to read during the summer
months perform better when school resumes in the fall.
Jim Cornish,
Classroom Connect, May 2003.
Summer has arrived!
Research shows that by reading at home a minimum of 20 minutes per day,
vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency will improve. We hope that this summer
students will continue to enjoy learning through reading. Our goal is for
students to be life-long readers who enjoy all types of reading materials.
Students in grades
6-8 are asked to:
**Read at least 20
minutes every day
**Keep a reading log
(magazines, newspapers, & graphic novels count!)
**Read at least 3
books
**Turn in the reading
log to their Language Arts teacher
at the start of
school for a Language Arts Quiz grade
Summer reading books
are not included in the
SJS Accelerated
Reader program.
The Accelerated
Reader program will begin for students on September 2nd. Details
about Accelerated Reader requirements will be outlined at the beginning of the
school year.
