Summer Reading – Intermediate (Students entering 3rd, 4th, & 5th)

Educators consider summer reading very important in developing life-long reading habits, in maintaining literacy skills and in promoting reading for pleasure. Studies have repeatedly shown that children who continue to read during the summer months perform better when school resumes in the fall.

Jim Cornish, Classroom Connect, May 2003.

The purpose of summer reading is to keep children reading during the summer to maintain good reading habits and reading levels.  Our goal is for students to be life-long readers who enjoy all types of reading materials.

Students in grades 3-5 are asked to:

**Read at least 15 minutes every day

**Keep a reading log

                             (magazines and newspapers count!)

**Try to read at least 3 books

**Turn in the reading log to their Language Arts teacher

at the start of school for a homework grade

Summer reading books are not included in the SJS Accelerated Reader program.

The Accelerated Reader program will begin for students on September 2nd.  Details about Accelerated Reader requirements will be outlined at the beginning of the school year.

Attached is a copy of a reading log.  For lists of suggested series and authors for intermediate students, a copy of the 2008-2009 Sunshine State List, and additional copies of the reading log, go to the school website:
