Summer Reading –
Primary
(Students entering 1st & 2nd)
Educators
consider summer reading very important in developing life-long reading habits,
in maintaining literacy skills and in promoting reading for pleasure. Studies
have repeatedly shown that children who continue to read during the summer
months perform better when school resumes in the fall.
Jim Cornish,
Classroom Connect, May 2003.
The purpose of summer
reading is to keep children reading during the summer to maintain good reading
habits and reading levels. Our goal is for students to be life-long readers
who enjoy all types of reading materials.
Students in grades 1
& 2 are asked to:
**Read or be read to
every day
**Keep a reading log
(magazines count!)
**Turn in the reading
log to their Language Arts teacher
at the start of
school
Helpful Hints
1.
Discuss
the books with your child as they read. Have them summarize the event,
identify the characters, make predictions, and tell you the sequence of the
story. This helps them with their comprehension skills.
2.
Read
with your child. Set aside time each day for family reading.
3.
Remember, although your child may need assistance, encourage them to do as
much as they can by themselves.
